Our classes have an average size of 12 students, allowing teachers to spend significant individualized time with each student. There’s no “back row” in classrooms this small. Students are more comfortable speaking up in this environment.
We’ve been running quadmesters for over 10 years with great success. This four-term structure focuses on two subjects per term, promoting a deeper understanding of subjects in addition to creating the flexibility for students to join Blyth Academy at any term during the school year.
Preparation for post-secondary education is the primary focus with increased attention on critical thinking, interpreting information, independent learning, and active participation in classes and activities. Our strong guidance department works with each student to define their pathway.

Ways to Learn
Full-Year Programs
We offer a comprehensive full-time program for Grades 7-12. Students studying with us for the full year benefit from our targeted programs for specific grades: the LaunchPad Program in Grades 9 & 10, and the Post-Secondary Preparation Program in Grades 11 & 12.
Term by Term Options
We have four intake periods during our school year to make starting at Blyth Academy as flexible as possible (September, November, February, April). This is possible due to our quadmester structure (four terms) which allows for flexibility for students who want to try us out or who are looking for extra credits in a gap year.
Night School
Night School allows students to maintain registration with their home school while benefitting from our small class sizes and personalized approach.
Summer School
Summer School offers highly personalized and experiential learning that enhances student's education and sets them up for a successful fall semester.
Private Courses
Private Studies provide students in Grades 9 – 12 with a one-on-one learning experience in which teachers tailor the lessons to the needs and schedule of the individual student.

Sports & Extracurriculars
Clubs & Extracurriculars
Our students are connected to the school not only through academics but also through extra-curricular activities and school events, and they drive what happens here. Popular clubs include Reach for the Top, Student Council, Robotics Club, and our writing club, which produces The Blyth Focus, our school magazine. Our students also enjoy athletic activities, including Ottawa 67s game days, a Ski Trip, skating on the Rink of Dreams, and our annual camping trip. In 2021-22 we look forward to new extracurriculars such as a running club in the neighbourhood, rowing club on the canal, and swim club at a nearby pool.
Student Engagement
The communities around our school play an integral part in shaping our school culture. Whether we’re having a science class at the Museum of Nature, a law class attending sessions in the Senate, acknowledging our place on unceded Algonquin territory as a Legacy School, or hosting graduation ceremony at the football stadium and TD Place, we are connected to our community and our city through experiential learning.
Student Showcase
The Glebe Student
The Class of 2021 Valedictorian, Sophia immersed herself in, and enriched, the school community over the 4 years she was a Blyth Academy student. Known for her bright personality and signature Australian accent, Sophia took every opportunity to lift the spirits of the school community. Whether organizing Spirit Weeks with Student Council, and special events for the Class of 2021 as part of the Grad Committee, or fundraising initiatives such as a supply drive for a school in Tanzania and raising money for cancer research, Sophia always found ways to lift others up, and epitomizes the values of a Blyth Academy student. Sophia takes to heart that a school is a community that should welcome, support, encourage and entertain its members. Blyth Academy The Glebe feels like such a community because Sophia has helped to make it so.
Being at Blyth since mid-grade 9 all the way through to graduation has been one wild rollercoaster of never- ending opportunities.
"Being at Blyth since mid-grade 9 all the way through to graduation has been one wild rollercoaster of never- ending opportunities. I have been able to do studies throughout the year (summer and school year) to catch up on my transition from Australian schooling to Canadian schooling. I have had many opportunities that I otherwise would have never been able to have, such as staying as a resident at University of King's College in Halifax for a two-week program and being able to travel to other countries in the middle of the school year and not be behind in my studies.
After I graduate, I am taking a gap year to travel and work on farms in Sweden so I can learn about self-sustainable farming, which is what I hope to do in the future along with having a small camp for children with mental health disorders so they can come to a place where they feel safe and can get help at the same time. After my gap year I plan to attend the Australian Defence Force Academy and get a degree in Aerospace engineering and become a helicopter pilot in the Australian Navy!"
Sophia
My daughter’s experience at Blyth Academy has been very positive and exceptional. We cannot say enough about the school, the staff, the teachers, the learning that takes place every day. The small class sizes and individual attention have greatly enhanced our daughter’s learning experience and growth. Each student can fully engage, contribute, debate openly, respect each other’s views and develop the valuable academic and social skills necessary to succeed in a post-secondary environment. If only all schools could offer this type of learning environment and model. We highly recommend Blyth Academy to any parents considering their child’s high school options. A huge Thank You to Ms. Larose, Mr. Hall, Ms. Kiros and to each of the teachers for everything you do!L. Hupe, Parent
Attending Blyth Academy Ottawa has been a life changing experience for us regarding our son. He told us that Blyth is the first school that he actually looks forward to going when it’s the weekend. He may not be always on time, but he is always happy to go. We are grateful.C. Gilka, Parent
When we made the decision to move our daughter to Blyth Academy full time last spring, we did so because we knew that some of the teachers at [her previous school] were never going to fully support her and would use her absences against her. What we did not count on was how much she has actually come to embrace and love the Blyth Academy culture. The teachers and staff at Blyth have always had her back and have been fully supportive of her efforts and dreams in a way that we never expected. Conversely, she sees herself as a Blyth student and a full-fledged member of the Blyth community – and an ambassador for the school. She is constantly telling her peers and others about how great the school is and how much better it is than any other school experience she has had.Bryce & Isabelle, Parents
