Teacher Spotlight - Kevin Hulbert!

How is your experience at Blyth so far?

I am living my dream. It’s my first year working full time and I’ve managed to find my way into my dream position in my dream type of school so I’m very, very happy.

How long have you been teaching?

This is my first full year teaching, I taught one class last semester at Blyth and before that I was doing very different things. I used to work as a recruiter, but before that I used to work at the charitable organization called Ronald McDonald House.  I gathered and brought in various groups, and taught them about the charity while guiding them through daily workshops. Before that, I worked as a summer camp director. I’ve been working in education related jobs, but this is my first full year as a teacher.

Why did you choose to teach at Blyth Academy Mississauga?

I really like the idea of providing more specialized and focused education to students. I see that public schools are really challenging because of the number of kids in every class and as a result, there are some restraints put on teachers. Blyth offers me the opportunity to work in an environment where I can use a style of teaching that is much more interesting to the students and I, while being aligned with my pedagogical beliefs.

What are some interesting facts about yourself?

I can drink water very fast. I have two children under the age of two. I love romantic comedies starring Hugh Grant and I’m the funniest person that my wife knows.

What are your hobbies?

My favourite thing to do is to play a sport called disc golf which is like frisbee golf.

What is your favourite game to participate in?

Because I have two little kids and one of them is two, my favourite game to play right now is Simon Says because I’m really good at it and my kid is not.

What is your favourite movie or tv show?

My favourite movie is called Children of Men. My favourite tv show is The Wire.

Where are you from?

I am from Brandon, Manitoba, which is the second biggest city in Manitoba, and I moved here 15 years ago.
