Message from the Director

Brandon Coccimiglio
Director of Hockey Operations, Shield Athletics

At Shield Athletics, development is built around three core pillars: technical, tactical, and transferable development. Students focus on building strong fundamentals on and off the ice, learning how to translate training into game performance, and developing the hockey IQ, mindset, and character needed to thrive in competition and in life.

With experience developing athletes from youth levels to Olympians and Stanley Cup Champions, Brandon and the Shield team provide a professional development model with individualized attention and a pathway tailored to each athlete’s journey.

Most importantly, the program is built around a culture of hard work, passion, accountability, resilience, and continuous growth. Every athlete is challenged, supported, and encouraged to become the best version of themselves.

Sincerely,

Long-Term Athletic Development
A structured September-to-June development model

The Shield High Performance Program follows a long-term athlete development model designed to build complete athletes through a structured, progressive system. Every athlete begins with an assessment to establish individual and group baselines, allowing the Shield team to identify strengths, gaps, and performance needs from day one.

September - November
Foundation & Athletic Base Building

This phase establishes the foundation for the season through assessment, movement quality, strength foundations, technical skating, mobility, core stability, body awareness, edge control, puck handling fundamentals, posture, and balance under movement.

December - February
Performance Development & Game Application

This phase transitions athletes from foundational work into performance-based training. Strength is converted into speed and power, while on-ice development becomes more competitive, tactical, and game-realistic.

At Blyth Academy, we take pride in our small class sizes, maintaining an average ratio of 12:1. This enables our teachers to establish personal connections with each student and their parents, working closely with them to help achieve their educational goals. Our commitment to small class sizes extends to our schools, where our principal, guidance counselor, and campus administrator also can engage with students individually, offering support when needed.

At Blyth Academy, fostering open and honest communication with parents is one of our core principles. Our teachers oversee two small classes each term, enabling them to dedicate time to regularly update parents on their child's progress. Additionally, our close-knit communities empower our principal and guidance counselor to swiftly address any parental inquiries or concerns.

Our teachers make use of Edsby, our learning management platform, to facilitate communication and share academic milestones and resources. This platform allows parents to access real-time updates on their child's performance and gain clarity on upcoming projects or tests.
