UNIT ONE
Heritage and Identity

In this unit, students will aim to answer the question, "How have historical interactions shaped Canadian heritage and identity?" They will explore the early interactions between Indigenous peoples and European settlers, examining both the positive and negative consequences of these encounters. Through activities such as researching key historical events and communities, students will develop an understanding of how these interactions have contributed to the development of Canadian identity. Assignments will encourage students to think critically about the significance of these historical events and their lasting impact on present-day Canada.

UNIT TWO
People and Environment

This unit focuses on the question, "How do people and governments work together to address social and environmental issues?" Students will explore the roles and responsibilities of Canadian citizens and governments, including Indigenous governments, in addressing key social and environmental challenges. They will investigate how different levels of government respond to issues such as poverty, climate change, and pollution. Through guided research projects, students will develop their own ideas for improving government responses and promoting active citizenship.

UNIT THREE
The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship

In this unit, students will explore the question, "What role does the government play in protecting citizens and the environment?" They will learn about the different levels of government in Canada, including federal, provincial, municipal, and Indigenous governments, and their responsibilities in addressing social and environmental issues. Students will investigate current issues and government actions, analyzing their effectiveness and proposing solutions. Through activities such as creating action plans and participating in discussions, students will develop a deeper understanding of the importance of responsible citizenship.

UNIT FOUR
Canada's Interactions with the Global Community

This final unit addresses the question, "How does Canada participate in the global community?" Students will explore Canada’s role in international organizations, its contributions to global efforts through foreign aid, and its environmental commitments. They will examine how Canada’s actions on the global stage impact both the world and Canada itself. Assignments will include researching Canada’s involvement in international organizations, analyzing the impact of its foreign aid efforts, and creating presentations on Canada’s environmental initiatives. Through these activities, students will gain a better understanding of Canada’s place in the world and the importance of international cooperation.
