The Ontario Curriculum: Science and Technology
Course Overview
The Grade 5 Science and Technology course is designed to develop students' understanding of various scientific principles through hands-on exploration and inquiry-based learning. Students will explore life systems, matter and energy, structures and mechanisms, and Earth and space systems. By engaging with these topics, students will deepen their scientific literacy and critical thinking skills, preparing them for more advanced studies in the future.
Course Outline
Below is a course outline for the online Grade 5 Science and Technology course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.
UNIT ONE
Life Systems
In this unit, students will explore the interconnectedness of life systems, focusing on human health and the human body. Students will examine various factors that affect health, including the impact of technology. They will also develop food literacy and learn about the different systems of the human body, with a special focus on the vital organs that keep these systems functioning.
UNIT TWO
Matter and Energy
This unit introduces students to the properties of matter and the forms of energy that drive changes in our world. Students will investigate the materials used in manufacturing and the impacts of manufacturing processes. They will explore the states of matter and the physical and chemical changes that matter can undergo. The unit concludes with a look at the applications of solids, liquids, and gases in everyday life.
UNIT THREE
Structures and Mechanisms
In this unit, students will investigate the forces that act on structures and mechanisms. They will explore both natural and human-made structures, learning about the effects of internal and external forces. Students will also consider how animals, plants, and humans protect themselves from harmful forces.
UNIT FOUR
Earth and Space Systems
Students will explore the Earth’s natural resources, the different forms of energy, and the impact of energy use on the environment. They will study energy-saving technologies and Indigenous approaches to resource management. The unit will also cover the law of conservation of energy, the relationship between energy use and climate change, and the basics of pseudocode as a tool for problem-solving.
Assessment
The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined by evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course.
