Course Overview

The Grade 5 Mathematics course is designed to build and strengthen students' understanding of numbers, basic algebra, spatial awareness, data interpretation, and financial literacy. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving exercises, students will develop critical thinking skills that will help them tackle more complex math concepts in the future.

Course Outline

Below is a course outline for the online Grade 5 Mathematics course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.

UNIT ONE
Numbers

In this unit, students will explore large whole numbers and learn to read, represent, compose, and decompose numbers up to 100,000. Students will practice comparing and ordering these numbers to understand their relationships better. Additionally, students will dive into fractions and decimals, learning to compare, order, and round them. Students will also explore how fractions, decimals, and percentages are connected and practice multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12. Students will use mental math strategies to solve problems and estimate sums and differences of decimal numbers.

UNIT TWO
Algebra

In this unit, students will explore the foundations of algebra through patterns, expressions, and equations. Students will start by identifying and creating patterns using whole numbers and decimals, and learn how to represent these patterns on a graph. As students progress, they will begin to work with unknown values and simple algebraic expressions. The unit will conclude with students solving basic equations and inequalities, helping them build a strong foundation in algebraic thinking.

UNIT THREE
Spatial Sense

In this unit, students will explore various aspects of geometry, focusing on shapes, angles, and transformations. Students will start by learning about the properties of triangles and how to identify congruent shapes. Next, students will explore 3D objects and how to view them from different perspectives. The unit will also introduce the Cartesian plane, where students will plot points and transform shapes. Students will then move on to comparing and measuring angles, and finally, students will explore area and perimeter, enhancing their understanding of space and measurement.

UNIT FOUR
Data

This unit focuses on data collection, organization, and interpretation. Students will start by learning how to collect and organize data effectively. Students will explore various ways to represent data, such as through graphs and charts. The unit also introduces measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) and discusses how graphs can sometimes be misleading. Students will learn to create infographics to represent data visually and will finish the unit by exploring probability concepts, including how to calculate the likelihood of different outcomes.

UNIT FIVE
Financial Literacy

In the final unit, students will develop essential financial literacy skills. Students will begin by understanding money transfers and calculating costs and transactions. The unit will cover the basics of budgeting, helping students learn how to manage money effectively. Students will also explore concepts related to credit and debt, and how to make smart shopping decisions. Finally, the unit will introduce the role of taxes and community contributions, helping students understand the broader financial system and their place within it.

Assessment

The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined by evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course.
