Course Overview

LWSCU online provides opportunities for students to increase their competence and confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Students will communicate about academic and personally relevant topics in increasingly spontaneous spoken interactions, and will develop their creative and critical thinking skills through exploring and responding to a variety of oral and written texts. Students will continue to enrich their understanding and appreciation of diverse communities in regions of the world where the language is spoken. They will also investigate personal and professional contexts in which knowledge of Spanish is required, and develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning.

Course Outline

Below is a course outline for the online LWSCU course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario LWSCU curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.

UNIT ONE
Cómo Era Y Cómo Soy / How I Was and How I Am

Essential Question: How have your physical appearance, personality and lifestyle changed compared to your childhood?

In this unit you will review and expand on some vocabulary and grammar topics learnt in Level 1, while also learning to describe and talk about the past.

UNIT TWO
Comunicación y Tecnologías / Communication and Technology

Essential Question: How have new technologies changed our ways of communicating?

In this unit you will learn to talk about the subject of new technologies and informatics. You will familiarise with the basic vocabulary to then reflect upon your own use of technologies. Furthermore, you will discuss how language and communication have changed due to new technologies.

UNIT THREE
De Viaje / Travel

Essential Question: How would you describe your favourite travel memories?

In this unit you will learn to talk about holidays, travel, and festivities in the past. You will also be able to talk about any health issues and you will learn to tell a story with past events in a cohesive and structured way.

UNIT FOUR
Nuestro Futuro / Our Future

Essential Question: What will our future look like?

In this unit you will learn to talk about the future of our planet and about your personal future plans regarding jobs and professions. You will learn to discuss on controversial issues related to the environment and the world of work.

Assessment

The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined following these percentages:

70% of the grade: Based on evaluations throughout the duration of the course. This component of a student’s grade will reflect the most consistent achievement level attained throughout the course.

30% of the grade: Based on final evaluations administered at the conclusion of the course. Final evaluations are administered as a culminating project (worth 15% of the final grade) and a final proctored exam (worth 15% of the final grade).

The LWSCU course explores purposes for reading a variety of texts, guiding students through reading and developing greater fluency in all aspects of reading and writing. Register Today!
