Course Overview
In Grade 5 Language, students will enhance their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. They will engage with a variety of texts and activities designed to deepen their understanding of language and its role in communication. Throughout the course, students will develop their critical thinking, creative expression, and communication abilities, preparing them for the challenges of the digital age.
Course Outline
Below is a course outline for the online Grade 5 Language course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.
UNIT ONE
Literacy Connections and Applications
In this unit, students will explore key language skills that are transferable across different contexts. They will engage in activities that develop their understanding of digital media literacy, online safety, research skills, and the creation of digital and media texts. By the end of this unit, students will be able to apply these skills effectively in both academic and everyday situations.
UNIT TWO
Exploring Informational Texts
This unit focuses on helping students understand and analyze informational texts. Students will learn how to identify main ideas, use text features, and distinguish between informational and non-informational texts. They will also practice summarizing and evaluating informational texts, enhancing their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
UNIT THREE
Novel Study - Diary of a Wimpy Kid
In this unit, students will dive into the novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. Through reading, discussion, and activities, students will explore the characters, plot, setting, and themes of the novel. They will use the skills learned in previous units to analyze the story and make connections to their own experiences. A copy of the novel will be required, available in paper, eBook, or audiobook formats.
UNIT FOUR
Persuasive Writing and Critical Media Literacy
In this final unit, students will learn how to craft persuasive arguments and critically evaluate media messages. They will explore different persuasive techniques, identify bias in media, and create their own persuasive media projects. This unit will help students become more effective communicators and critical consumers of media in the digital age.
Assessment
The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined by evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course.
This Grade 5 Language course provides students with a comprehensive foundation in key language skills, preparing them for future academic challenges and helping them develop as thoughtful, articulate individuals.
