Course Overview

This course examines the nature of culture; how cultural identities are acquired, maintained, and transformed; and theories used to analyse cultures. Students will explore world cultures, with an emphasis on the analysis of religious and spiritual beliefs, art forms, and philosophy. They will study the contributions and influence of a range of cultural groups and will critically analyse issues facing ethnocultural groups within Canada and around the world. Students will develop and apply research skills and will design and implement a social action initiative relating to cultural diversity. 

The Concept of Culture 

Essential Question: What is culture? 

In this unit, students will explore terminology, theories, and concepts related to culture. Students will investigate the function and transmission of culture, and how it impacts perceptions, attitudes, and behaviours.

Cultural Expressions

Essential Question: How does the way in which people express themselves vary amongst cultures? 

In this unit, students will explore how art, philosophy, and religion vary amongst cultures. Students will investigate how the function of expression is dependent on culture. 

Critical Cultural Issues

Essential Question: How do power relations impact culture? 

In this unit, students will explore how power dynamics impact culture. Students will explore the role of stereotypes and misrepresentations in culture, and examine culture challenges for minority populations. 

Social Action and Personal Engagement 

Essential Question: How can I contribute to positive change in my culture? 

In this unit, students will design, implement, and evaluate an initiative to address an issue related to cultural groups or promoting cultural diversity. 


The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined following these percentages: 

70% of the grade: Based on evaluations throughout the duration of the course. This component of a student’s grade will reflect the most consistent achievement level attained throughout the course. 

30% of the grade: Based on final evaluations administered at the conclusion of the course. The final evaluation is administered as a culminating project (worth 30% of the final grade).
