The Ontario Curriculum: Science and Technology
Course Overview
Grade 6 Science and Technology is designed to help students deepen their scientific inquiry skills by making strong connections to the scientific method. Students will draw connections between biodiversity, electricity, structures and mechanisms, and Earth and space in order to conceptualize the world around them as a system full of interacting parts. Students will develop their scientific and technological literacy to support and prepare them to be active problem solvers in an ever-changing world.
COURSE OUTLINE
Below is a course outline for the online Grade 6 Science and Technology course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.
UNIT ONE
Life Systems – Biodiversity
In this unit, students will explore the scientific method and its use in developing scientific thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will investigate the importance of biodiversity and explore the characteristics of life. Students will develop an understanding of sustainability and its importance in preserving biodiversity in a changing planet. Finally, students will explore local biodiversity issues in their community.
UNIT TWO
Matter and Energy – Electrical Phenomena, Energy, and Devices
In this unit, students will develop an understanding of the basics of electricity, including both static and current electricity. Students will investigate both series and parallel circuits and explore circuit diagrams to make connections to real-world electrical devices. Students will explore energy transformations that exist in the real-world and learn about responsible uses of electricity.
UNIT THREE
Structures and Mechanisms - Flight
In this unit, students will investigate the four forces of flight in order to develop an understanding of how flying works. Students will extend this understanding to make comparisons between airplanes and flying organisms. Students will then explore the history of human flight and consider the future of flight.
UNIT FOUR
Earth and Space Systems - Space
In this unit, students begin by first investigating the various key objects that make up our solar system and the interactions that exist between them. Students will then examine how these bodies cause various natural phenomena on the planet Earth. Finally, students will examine advances in science that have allowed for space exploration and the potential for more extensive exploration in the future.
ASSESSMENT
The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined by evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course.
