The Ontario Curriculum: Mathematics
Course Overview
Grade 6 Mathematics online is designed to develop students’ number sense, spatial reasoning, and financial literacy while refining their algebra and problem-solving skills. Students will investigate relationships between integers operations and deepen their understanding of fractions concepts. They will also explore relationships that emerge from the measurement of figures and two-dimensional shapes. Students will also reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.
COURSE OUTLINE
Below is a course outline for the online Grade 6 Mathematics course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.
UNIT ONE
Estimating with Whole Numbers
In this unit, students will explore the idea of estimation by learning to make educated guesses. Students will explore estimation using familiar operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students will deepen their understanding of important concepts such as place value and rounding. Students also explore addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimal numbers.
UNIT TWO
Statistics and Graphing
In this unit, students will explore the various types of questions that can be used to collect data. They will deepen their understanding of what constitutes bias, and the implications that it has on data collection. Students will then learn to represent data in various forms and using different graphs. Students will extend this understanding to read and interpret graphs to make meaning out of the data that is represented.
UNIT THREE
Fractions Concepts and Operations
In this unit, students will explore the idea of prime factorization using factor trees to analyze prime and composite numbers. Students will investigate the concepts of greatest common factors and lowest common multiples, while applying them to reduce and simplify fractions.
UNIT FOUR
Integers
In this unit, students will revisit integers and deepen their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills. Students will apply their understanding to solve problems involving positive and negative whole numbers.
UNIT FIVE
Expressions and Equations
In this unit, students will develop an understanding of the meaning of the term expression and apply their understanding to write and evaluate algebraic expressions. Students will then extend their understanding to solve word problems that involve expressions. Lastly, students will explore the process used to multiply and divide expressions in multiple steps.
UNIT SIX
Geometry and Spatial Reasoning
In this unit, students will investigate the key characteristics of shapes, angles, lines, triangles, and quadrilaterals. Students will solve problems by applying the understanding that they develop throughout the unit. Lastly, students will extend their understanding to explore polyhedrons, edges, vertices, and faces.
UNIT SEVEN
Ratios and Probability
In this unit, students will investigate ratios, percentages, and probability. Students will extend their understanding to solve real-world problems involving these key concepts. Students will then explore the process used to convert between percentages, decimals, and fractions. Finally, students will investigate the key differences between theoretical and experimental probability and explore the role the number of trials has in a probability experiment.
UNIT EIGHT
Measurement
In this unit, students will begin by exploring units of measure in the metric system and apply their understanding to solve real-world measurement problems. Students will then revisit the familiar concepts of perimeter, area, and volume and solve problems involving real-world scenarios.
UNIT NINE
Patterns
In this unit, students will investigate the criteria for a pattern to exist, as well as how to find and create their own patterns using sequences of numbers. Students will explore motion of geometric shapes by investigating the impact that rotations, reflections, and scale changes have on a shape. Students will then revisit the concept of plotting ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
UNIT TEN
Financial Literacy
In this unit, students will develop and refine their financial literacy skills by investigating sales tax and discounts and their connections to percentages. Students will then explore the concept of simple interest and apply their understanding to solve real-world financial application problems.
ASSESSMENT
The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined by evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course.
The Grade 6 Mathematics course explores number sense, spatial reasoning, and financial literacy with a focus on developing problem-solving skills.
