UNIT ONE
Creative Writing
In this unit, we will learn all about creative writing! We will explore and build off a variety of different writing prompts to get our creative ideas flowing, while working on our writing and editing skills!
UNIT TWO
Short Stories
In this unit, we will read/listen to several short stories and analyze different literary elements found in each. We will use our knowledge of plot diagrams to shape our answers to questions about the stories we’re reading. To finish off the unit, students will be writing their own children’s book!
UNIT THREE
Media - News
In this unit, we will introduce the importance of being media literate and how we consume media in our daily lives. This unit will focus on factual writing and how we consume our news, either in paper or online formats. Students will learn how to analyze and write a factual news report all while becoming critical thinkers about the messages they are receiving.
UNIT FOUR
Word Nerd Novel Study
In this unit, we will be reading the novel “Word Nerd,” by Canadian author, Susin Nielsen. We will explore a variety of reading comprehension activities that will help with your greater understanding of the novel. You will use the skills you learned about literary elements in our Short Stories Unit to solidify your understanding of the novel.
You will need a copy of the novel for this unit. You can purchase this in paper format, an eBook or listen to an audiobook version.
UNIT FIVE
Podcasts
In this unit, we will be looking at podcasts (what they are, different types, if you could create your own). Students will listen to the 10-episode podcast series of Mars Patel, use their listening strategies to reflect on what they're hearing and make predictions and write journal reflections throughout the series.
ASSESSMENT
The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined by evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course.
