The Ontario Curriculum: Art
Course Overview
This course introduces students to the issues, ideas, and themes that inform the world of art. They will extend their knowledge of the elements and principles of art. Students will use the vocabulary of the elements and principles in order to talk about artwork, to discuss how art is created, and describe what the viewer sees. Students will explore art, culture and values, and make connections between the artwork and the culture. They will also have the opportunity to tap into their creativity and create works of art.
COURSE OUTLINE
Below is a course outline for the online Grade 8 Art course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.
UNIT ONE
Visual Arts
Throughout this unit you will explore the understanding of art, art versus culture, the elements and principles of art. You will also discover and apply the concept of "still life" as well as graphic design. Lastly you will explore visual arts careers and the purpose of art in our society.
UNIT TWO
Drama
In this unit, students will develop their understanding of the elements of drama and drama techniques. They will explore the role of the actor, scenic and costume designer and the role of the director. Students will also research the importance of theatre.
UNIT THREE
Dance
In this unit, students will develop their understanding of the elements of dance and the critical analysis process. They will explore the role of cultural content in dance. Students will also create a dance sequence.
UNIT FOUR
Music
In this unit, students will develop their understanding of the elements of music and interpreting music and sound through visual art. They will explore the role of visual arts and synesthesia. Students will also create a music-to-art map interpretation.
ASSESSMENT
The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined by evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course.
The Grade 8 Art course explores purposes for reading a variety of texts, guiding students through reading and developing greater fluency in all aspects of reading and writing.
