The Ontario Curriculum: Art
Course Overview
In Grade 6 Art, students will participate in an immersive exploration of creativity through Visual Arts, Drama, Dance, and Music. In Visual Arts, students will develop an understanding of how to use these elements and principles by creating their own unique pieces of artwork. The Drama unit develops their understanding of elements of drama and techniques, while Dance empowers students to embrace movement as a form of artistic expression. In Music, students will identify the elements of music and understand some specifics of these elements. Through hands-on projects and collaborative activities, students cultivate their artistic abilities, gain cultural insights, and build a foundation for lifelong appreciation and engagement with the arts.
COURSE OUTLINE
Below is a course outline for the online Grade 6 Art course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.
UNIT ONE
Visual Arts
In this unit, students will review the Elements and Principles of Art. They will develop an understanding of how to use these elements and principles by creating their own unique pieces of artwork. Students will also explore different types of art careers and complete a creative and colourful Mind Map.
UNIT TWO
Drama
In this unit, students will develop their understanding of elements of drama and techniques. They will explore ways to make presentations (e.g. monologues) expressive and dramatic. Students will also develop their knowledge about different types of theatre through research and report writing.
UNIT THREE
Dance
In this unit, students will identify the five elements of dance and understand some specifics of these elements. They will solve problems when deciding how to incorporate the elements into the dances that they create. Students will also research and identify ways in which pop culture and the media influence our understanding of dance.
UNIT FOUR
Music
In this unit, students will identify the elements of music and understand some specifics of these elements. They will review the difference between beat and rhythm and practice clapping to the beat. They will learn about Body Percussion, and will be asked to create a unique routine using different techniques. Students will also do a research project on the history of music.
ASSESSMENT
The final grade a student achieves will represent the quality of their overall achievement of expectations for the course. The final grade will be determined by evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course.
The Grade 6 Art course explores purposes for reading a variety of texts, guiding students through reading and developing greater fluency in all aspects of reading and writing.
