Course Overview

This course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the complex interrelationships within Canada’s natural and human systems and their connections to global systems. Students will explore key aspects of Canadian history, geography, and citizenship, examining how historical interactions, governance, and environmental stewardship have shaped Canada’s identity and role in the world. Throughout the course, students will engage with various social, economic, and environmental issues, applying critical thinking and research skills to develop informed perspectives and propose solutions. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the factors that contribute to Canada’s heritage, its role in the global community, and the importance of responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship.

Course Outline

Below is a course outline for the online Grade 9 Exploring Canadian Geography course offered by Blyth Academy. As the Ontario curriculum is set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the course and skills learned remain the same whether you take it in person or online.   

UNIT ONE
Heritage and Identity

In this unit, students will explore the early interactions between Indigenous peoples and European settlers, analyzing the impact of these encounters on the development of Canadian identity. Through the study of historical events and communities, students will gain insight into how these interactions have shaped the cultural and social fabric of Canada. This unit emphasizes the importance of understanding the diverse perspectives that have contributed to the formation of Canadian heritage.

UNIT TWO
People and Environment

This unit focuses on the relationship between people and the environment in Canada. Students will investigate how Canadian governments and citizens work together to address social and environmental challenges, including issues related to poverty, climate change, and pollution. By examining the roles and responsibilities of different levels of government, students will develop a deeper understanding of how these entities collaborate to create sustainable communities and protect natural resources.

UNIT THREE
The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship

In this unit, students will delve into the structure and function of Canadian government at various levels, including federal, provincial, municipal, and Indigenous governments. They will explore the role of government in addressing social and environmental issues, and the responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society. Through case studies and projects, students will analyze government responses to current issues and propose actionable solutions, enhancing their understanding of responsible citizenship and governance.

UNIT FOUR
Canada’s Interactions with the Global Community

This final unit examines Canada’s role on the international stage, focusing on its participation in global organizations, foreign aid contributions, and environmental commitments. Students will explore how Canada collaborates with other nations to address global challenges and how these interactions benefit both Canada and the global community. Through research and presentations, students will evaluate the effectiveness of Canada’s international involvement and consider the implications of its global partnerships.
