Introducing Alex: Blyth Academy Online’s New AI-Powered Learning Assistant

Blyth Academy Online (BAO) is proud to announce the launch of Alex, our new AI-powered Learning Assistant, now available to students directly within Brightspace. With this launch, BAO becomes one of the first online schools in North America to introduce a course-specific AI assistant, reflecting our continued commitment to innovation and student success.

Why Alex?

Students today are learning in an increasingly digital world. While AI tools are becoming more common, many raise concerns about safety, reliability, and distraction. That’s why we created Alex: a safe, curriculum-focused study companion designed by educators, for students.

Unlike general AI platforms that pull information from across the internet, Alex works only with teacher-provided course content. This ensures every explanation, summary, or practice quiz aligns directly with what students are learning in class. Parents can feel confident knowing Alex is both accurate and age-appropriate.

How Students Benefit

Alex provides 24/7 support across all subjects, even the most niche or advanced courses. Whether clarifying a tough concept, generating practice questions, summarizing readings, or helping plan study steps, Alex is always available right where students need it: inside Brightspace.

Paired with BAO’s Using AI as Your Learning Assistant module, Alex also teaches students how to engage with AI tools responsibly and effectively, building skills they’ll carry into university and beyond.

A Message from Leadership

Nathan Bishop, Director of Educational Technology for Blyth Academy Online, shared: “At BAO, we are proud to be one of the first online schools in North America to launch a safe, course-specific AI assistant. Alex gives students the support they need to thrive academically, while also modeling how to use AI responsibly. It’s about empowering students to take ownership of their learning in a safe, guided way.”

Ijlal Syed, Head of Department for Artificial Intelligence at Blyth Academy, added:

“AI is changing education, but it must be introduced carefully and responsibly. Alex is unique because it’s built on top of Blyth Academy’s curriculum and guided by our educators. Students can use it to deepen understanding, practice independently, and learn how to use AI safely — without the risks of misinformation or distraction.”

Part of a Larger Vision for Responsible AI in Education

The launch of Alex is not only a milestone for BAO but also part of a wider commitment across our global network of schools. Blyth Academy Online is a member of Globeducate, one of the world’s leading international education groups with more than 65 schools in 11 countries.

Globeducate has recently appointed a Global Head of AI to ensure that artificial intelligence is introduced thoughtfully and responsibly across all schools in the network. This leadership allows BAO to draw on international expertise while focusing on what matters most to our families: safe, reliable, and meaningful ways for students to use AI in their learning.

With Alex, BAO is proud to be one of the first schools in North America to show how AI can enhance education while maintaining the guidance and care of our teachers.

Looking Ahead

Alex is now live for BAO students, with plans to expand across more courses and programs in the months ahead. We’re excited to see how our students use this innovative tool to build confidence, independence, and lifelong learning skills.

Homework doesn’t wait — and now, neither does Alex.
