Our Italian program is a superb combination
of the excitement and bright lights of the Eternal City;
the art, beauty, and culture of Tuscany; and the stunning
beaches and mountains of the island of Sardinia.
Siena
and Florence
The first
half of our program will be spent in Siena, Italy's most
enchanting medieval city, in the heart of Tuscany. Piazza
del Campo, which dates back to 1347, will serve as our daily
meeting place. The Piazza is the site of the annual Palio,
which has occurred annually since the Middle Ages, and which
we will have the pleasure of attending during both our July
and August programs. A dinner with one of the Palio riding
teams will help us get in the mood for this great race! From
the Piazza, narrow winding streets lead us to the Duomo, the
ancient aqueducts of the Fonte Branda, and the beauty of the
Hospital
of Santa Maria della Scala. Our hotel in Siena is nestled
in a quiet and tranquil setting, boasting superb views of
the hills of ancient Tuscany. A visit to Florence will be
a highlight in our stay in Tuscany.
Sardinia
We will then move to the breathtaking island of Sardinia
off the west coast of mainland Italy for five days. Departing
from Siena, we will travel overland to the port town of Livorno,
where we will board our high-speed ferry to the island and
our Hotel.
This beautiful coastal region was developed by the Aga Khan
and offers a combination of mountains and beaches that is
unrivalled in Europe.
Rome
The second
half of our program will be spent in Rome. The Eternal
City offers a cornucopia of history, architecture, and masterpieces
of every description. Here, ancient history is visible on
every street corner. We will visit major sights, including
the Church of Trinita dei Monti, the Spanish Steps, and the
Piazza de Spagna. We will explore the Colosseum,
the Forum, and the Vatican,
including an audience with the Pope. We will also have plenty
of time to sample many of the great Italian Trattorias for
our Dine Around 2010 program. Our last night in Rome will
feature a final banquet and awards night as we celebrate our
incredible journey through Italy!
