Get ready to experience the true history of Spain on this fun filled day trip from Madrid! We will board our coach, stopping first at Los Cuatro Postes to admire the panoramic view of Avilia. The ancient hill top town has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its 11th century walls and labyrinth of towers and spires. We will visit the San Vincente Basilica and the Avilia Cathedral.

After Avilia, we will continue on to Segovia and see one of the best preserved Roman monuments on the Iberian Peninsula-- Segovia’s Roman Aqueduct. Built in the time of Augustus, this architectural marvel once spanned 16 kilometers with 118 arches. Only a portion of this massive structure is visible today. As we walk through the streets of Segovia, we will catch glimpses of Alcazar a beautiful 11th century fort which many believe to be the inspiration for the castle at Walt Disney World.

After our day of sightseeing we will be driven back home to Madrid in time for dinner.

One of the most breathtaking sights in Catalonia is the Benedictine monastery at Montserrat, located approximately an hour northwest of Barcelona. Montserrat, which literally means “sawed mountain”, is aptly named—its uneven edifice is visible from miles away! Its sheer beauty has attracted artists and visitors alike from around the world. Sitting high atop the mountain is a 12th century Romanesque wooden sculpture of a black Virgin Mary known as “La Moreneta.” Thousands of devout Catholics visit each year, making it one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Spain. We will have time to hike the nearby trails after viewing the monastery. Fantastic photo opportunities abound as we take the time to discover this beautiful spot in Spain.

We will be departing the residence after breakfast and make the journey to Montserrat by coach. We will visit of the monastery and next-door basilica with time after to walk around and take in the sights before returning to Barcelona in the late afternoon.

Talk about adventure! This full day excursion first takes us to a completely different country! Welcome to the Principality of Andorra, the fourth smallest country in Europe, located in the Eastern Pyrenees Mountains, bordering Spain. We will then spend our time hiking in the Pyrenees, the mountains that form a natural barrier between France and Spain. Our guide will lead us on beginner paths which lead to stunning vistas of the mountains. Be sure to bring comfortable clothing and shoes, as we spend one day in two countries!

The Community Service Program

Need lies just beneath the surface of the bright and vibrant surface of Spain. Under the direction and supervision of our staff, students will have the opportunity to donate some time in order to contribute to environmental, social and/or cultural programs. Help create positive change by signing up for this worthy opportunity.

Approximately 5-6 hours of work can be completed and these hours are fully accredited towards your community service requirements in Ontario.

Donating items to needy organizations is a great way to make a big impact. (A list of these items will be posted in the next two weeks). Collect these from your friends and family and bring them to donate during your trip. You may earn up to a maximum of two hours.

You are responsible for carrying your donations in your own suitcase. When you donate the items, please let your community service supervisor know in order to process and confirm your pre-trip hours.
