BATH
AND STONEHENGE ($160.00 CAD) |
Following breakfast we will depart
London for Bath, a World Heritage Site and undoubtedly
one of Britain’s most beautiful cities.
It was first put it on the map in the 1st-century
by the Romans, when they built a temple here in
honour of the goddess Minerva, and indeed were
the first to recognize the unique quality of its
waters. We will embark on a tour of the sophisticated
network of baths that takes advantage of the mineral
springs which gush forth from the earth at temperatures
upwards of 116 degrees F. During the 18th-century,
the hot water springs attracted the wealthy Georgians
who transformed Bath into one of the most fashionable
and famous cities in Europe, so well described
in the novels of Jane Austen, who lived in the
city. Today little in Bath has been changed. It
is a lively, cosmopolitan city with superb shopping.
Don’t forget to pack your bathing suit!
We will have free time for lunch,
shopping and further exploration of the city before
we board the coach to drive to Stonehenge, England’s
most enigmatic and celebrated prehistoric monument.
Despite the “definitive” books written
on the subject, its original purpose remains a
mystery. Was it an astronomical observatory for
a sun-worshipping cult? Perhaps it is some kind
of Neolithic ‘computing device’ capable
of predicting eclipses? The medieval phrase “Stonehenge”
translates to “hanging stones”. This
‘circle of stones’ represents an amazing
engineering feat since many of the boulders, the
famous ‘bluestones’ in particular,
were transferred from as far away as Wales. The
labour involved in quarrying, transporting, and
carving these immense stones is astonishing, all
the more so when you realize that it was accomplished
before the great pyramids of Egypt were built.
Prepare to be amazed!

We
are spending our summer travelling around the
world and experiencing different countries and
cultures but we are also living in communities
where people are in need of aid. Under the direction
and supervision of our staff, students will have
the opportunity to help with AL Noor, a centre
for children with special needs. We will spend
two mornings helping set up summer camp for these
wonderful children. The hours you accumulate on
this program can be used towards the 40 hours
required to graduate from secondary school but
the main reward will be your sense of contact
with the community and the pleasure of giving
back.
