“Aloha
'aina simply means to love and respect the land.
Malama 'aina means to care for and nurture the
land so it can give back all that is needed to
sustain life for ourselves and for our future
generations.”
Living life with Aloha is the
fundamental way of life in Hawaii. Aloha not only
means hello and goodbye but also, love, respect,
forgiveness, kindness, sharing, caring and understanding.
Aloha ‘aina means love of the land and Hawaiians
believe it is intrinsic to ones well being - the
land is where you go to get grounded. Caring for
the Aina, caring for your Ohana (family) and living
life with Aloha are the fundamental backbones
of Hawaiian life. Embrace this local ethos by
being part of a Blyth aided environmental project
and give something back to the islands and community
you will be enjoying during your stay.
In Kauai as in many of the Hawaiian
Islands there is only one landfill site and it
is rapidly running out of room. The influx of
tourism has greatly added to the amount of non
organic waste passing through the islands and
being such a remote archipelago, thousands of
miles away from the mainland, waste issues are
a big problem.
Working in collaboration with
Kalaheo School and local environmental groups,
we will receive a container delivery of expired
beverages from a local beverage company. Creating
a “recycling party” we will empty
the liquid from these bottles, and sort them into
a 40ft container which will be shipped to Oahu
for recycling and redemption. The redemption money
pays for the container shipment and the remainder
goes back to Kalaheo School so this project not
only helps to recycle but also serves as a fundraiser
for the local school. For this 5 hour project
we need 80 volunteers and we would like to encourage
as many students as possible to take part. It
will be a fun day of music and recycling, a chance
to meet and mix with locals and feel a sense of
satisfaction that as young global citizens we
are contributing to the recycling of thousands
of cans, plastic and glass bottles that would
otherwise be dumped in the local landfill.
As a traveling group we will
also initiate our own recycling programme at our
hotel to minimize the environmental impact that
Blyth Education will have as a visiting group
to these beautiful pristine islands. We encourage
as many students as possible to sign up for this
service.
The more of us do it, the more aloha we can spread!
