Health

The program travels in Kenya with a qualified medical doctor who will be on hand to deal with any medical concerns or emergencies. It is imperative for participants to complete the medical form in advance so the program doctor can address any special medical needs. Students who take regular medications must bring sufficient quantities for the duration of the trip as some medications are not immediately available. In the event of a medical emergency the patient can be evacuated to an approved hospital by air ambulance. Our physician will accompany the patient and monitor his or her medical treatment during the hospital stay.

In addition to physical risks that are involved in travel to any destination, while in Kenya students are at risk of emotional strain which may arise while working with orphans and impoverished communities. In order to minimize this stress, the doctor and staff provides individual support to each student as well as group discussions each day.

Safety and Supervision

Blyth is committed to putting safety first by providing the lowest student to supervisor ratio as well as performing a full review of local conditions before the trip. In addition, our links with institutional partners in Kenya ensure:

• current information on travel conditions
• safe and well managed facilities
• secure access to surrounding lands and communities
• knowledgeable local guides
• back up for emergencies.

Students are required to agree to and follow conduct guidelines listed in the Blyth Academy Behaviour and Honour Code. There is no tolerance for students participating in activities dangerous to themselves or others. Those who do not abide by the rules are asked to leave the program immediately. This is done to provide the safest environment for all participants of the field school.
