OUR MISSION
Our volunteers will help construct a school building / school room in a small village outside Arusha. This will provide volunteers with a great deal of interaction with local children and with a unique insight into the social, cultural and ecological issues facing traditional life in Africa.

Arusha Region
Arusha is a small African town nestled under Mount Meru with commanding views of Kilimanjaro. The gateway to the Serengeti and to the Southern Masaii land, it is an old colonial town, with a modern bustling ai,r in part because it hosted the Rwandan war crime tribunals. Tanzanian history goes back almost two million years. The fossils found at Olduvai Gorge by Louis and Mary Leakey now stand among the most important artifacts of the origins of our species. However, Tanzania, like many African nations, has experienced social, medical and economic chaos despite being a safe and stable environment.

THE WORK
Your work will put you in the front lines with a community in need. Your task will be to construct a school building/school room in the village. You will be given all the guidance, tools and materials needed to be successful. You will work side by side with locals, completing the structure and learning each others’ culture. You will also do further community-service work with children during some afternoons and evenings. You will be fully immersed and challenged by day’s end. At the completion of your work portion, you will have the satisfaction of having given enormously to the future of the community.

THE SAFARI
Our seven-day safari is the perfect reward for such an intense physical and emotional commitment to the community. It starts with an overland journey across the Maasai Steppe and into a very remote corner of Tarangire National Park. From there we will visit and camp with a Hadza hunter-gatherer community in the beautiful Yaida Valley, and experience what is one of the last truly traditional communities in Africa. We finish in the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the world’s great wonders, where we will look for some of the last rhinos in Africa and see myriad other large animals.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS
Participants will be living in a small, clean and safe house in the village (inhabited only by volunteers). Double (at times triple) occupancy will be expected. Volunteers will be responsible for maintaining the house with the assistance of a local “house mother.” The local house mother will prepare all meals for the group.

Accommodation on the safari is in two-person tents around a campfire. The safari is supported by very experienced staff who pitch the tents, cook and clean. Morning tea delivered to your tent and hot showers are daily highlights!

RECREATION AND FREE TIME
Our evenings and weekends will be spent exploring the village, interacting with the locals and visiting Arusha. We will learn traditional arts and crafts from the elders such as Batiks, Masai beading, and henna. In the evenings we will unwind around campfires, discussing the challenges and successes of the day.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
The safety and security of our volunteers is our most important priority. We have been operating these projects in these venues very safely for many years and we continuously monitor event changes and react accordingly. We provide daily supervision both during and after work and in the evenings. If we feel that a location has become unsafe, we will shift the program to a secure area or refund the volunteer fees.

The country enjoys political stability and a very low crime rate. It is a peaceful mix of Christian, Muslim and Indigenous people. Village life is traditional and welcoming . Access to excellent medical care is available within 30 minutes of the village.
