An Exciting Announcement from Blyth Academy Yorkville
I am pleased to write you with some good news. We have found a new home for Blyth Academy Yorkville! The new location will be at 85 St. Nicholas Street, a beautiful historic building that used to be the Toronto Police Service Stables, when the city ended at Bloor Street. It is an ideal location as it is close to the TTC and to our partners. I am thrilled that come September 2013 we will all be in one building, and that we have the opportunity to build the school to suit the needs of our school community.
On Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 from 6-7pm we will be hosting an information session about the new school building, with a chance to see and talk about the design. More details on this event will follow. Save the date and submit your RSVP here. It is my sincere hope that students, parents and staff are all part of this wonderful moment in our school history.
Thank you for your continued support.
Warm regards,
Nili Isaacs

Here is what our Head of School of Blyth Academy Ottawa has to say about the partnership:
“I am delighted that Blyth Academy, Ottawa has formed a partnership with one of Ottawa’s foremost artistic establishment, the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Blyth Academy raises $10,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation
On October 18th, 2012, over 200 students and staff from Blyth Academy campuses at Burlington, Lawrence Park, Port Credit, Thornhill and Yorkville came together for a Terry Fox Run in Port Credit’s beautiful Memorial Park. Following a presentation on the inspiring strength, dedication and courage of a young Terry Fox, students took to the fields for an hour of activity. We ran, walked, rollerbladed and played soccer and ultimate frisbee in the beautiful fall sunshine.
The Barrie and Whitby campuses also participated in Terry Fox Runs. The Whitby crew joined the Durham School Run, running through local neighbourhoods and ending at Peel Park. Some of our students were so fast that they reached the finish line before it was even set up! In Barrie, the staff and students headed across the street to walk and run along the beautiful Lake Simcoe.
Before and after the events, students collected pledges and donations. Staff and teachers encouraged participation by promising all sorts of rewards. We now have several teachers with radically different hairstyles!
The final tally is now in. Blyth Academy raised over $10,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation! Congratulations to all of our students for coming together for such an important cause. Special thanks also to Luke Coles, and Mary Rose Patterson for coordinating the events!

New programs include:
Biking Europe: a 26 day biking adventure from Prague to Paris including Bohemia, Austria, Bavaria,

A retrospective on the summer of 2012
Dear Parents,
As yet another Blyth International Summer comes to an end, I wanted to share with our Blyth family some thoughts having visited more than 800 of our students on 10 programs. More than 1,200 students and faculty participated in our high school programs abroad this summer and I am mindful that we still have three programs abroad and that those students may feel that it’s premature to draw conclusions. However, I am pleased by the positive feedback we have received to date.
Firstly, the data points to perhaps our best summer yet as our approval and recommend ratings, for the first time, exceeded 95% from parents and over 98% from our students. Several programs had perfect scores in these ratings and no program scored less than 90%. Standards were consistently high across the board. Our highest scores were for the teachers and I congratulate them and Academic Director Chris Fuller for this success.
One dilemma every school faces is whether they are primarily concerned to please the parents or the students in designing and executing their program. Many parents, understandably, are concerned first and foremost with the safety of their children, while most students are hankering for freedom and exploration. We seem to have found the sweet spot in this balance, although perfection continues to elude us as the expulsion of four students for alcohol offences attests.
Secondly, from an educational perspective we have had a very good year with virtually every student gaining a credit and some really excellent work being produced at the top end. More than half of the student body described their program as the best educational experience of their schooling, which I think speaks to the level of engagement, empathy, and critical thinking involved in our personalized approach to learning. Small class size certainly helps; our average this year was under 12, but for most students it was the engagement they felt, some for the first time, as a result of an experiential approach that constantly took them out of the classroom and asked them to participate in their own learning.
During the school year I often meet with students in our schools and ask them why they think they do better at Blyth than in previous schools they may have attended. This year, one student told me that their teacher seemed to care so much about him that he felt he just couldn’t face going into class without his homework being done. As a parent, it was interesting to see that this was more important to him than the prodding that we provide at home and even trumped concerns that he had for his own future success.
Thirdly, I was really pleased to see that two new programs this year; Nicaragua and the Grand Tour Asia were very successful. Next year will bring four new and exciting programs to the Blyth offerings which will be launched on October 17th. Stayed tuned.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone in the Blyth family for their support his summer, including the students, parents, faculty, and my staff in Toronto. Mounting 22 programs in 28 countries is a tall task, but one that is worthwhile to me when I see the transformative effects that they have on the young people that take part.
With best wishes,
Sam Blyth,
Chair,
Blyth Academy.

Globalizing Blyth Academy
In 2012-13 Blyth Academy will admit 10% of our enrolment from approximately 10 countries around the world in a program that will make our campus populations more diverse and cosmopolitan, and continue to raise the academic standards in our classrooms. Blyth Academy launches an innovative Grade 9 and 10 Foundations Program
In recent surveys and studies, educators have begun to recognize the lack of life skills being taught in high schools. Students graduate with the ability to graph functions and write essays, but are not be able to monitor their personal finances or manage their time properly. Blyth Academy's new Grade 9 and 10 Foundations Program aims to introduce its students to these important life skills at an early age and provide them with a well-rounded education.
Available for the academic year 2012-13, this exciting new Grade 9 and 10 Foundations Program combines Ontario Ministry required courses, Educational Partnerships and a Life Skills component.
Developed by Program Director Luke Coles and Curriculum Developer Sheree North, this program will include a period every day for hands-on learning of topics such as Financial Literacy, First Aid/CPR, Babysitting, Nutrition/Cooking, Mind/Body Balance and Health, among others. Blyth will invite community leaders and experts in these fields to attend its schools and share their knowledge with its students.
In addition to this unique Life Skills program, Blyth will enhance its students’ educational experience through their Educational Partnerships: the Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto International Film Festival and Outward Bound Canada at the Evergreen Brickworks. These Partnerships are unique to Blyth Academy in the GTA, and allow its students the advantage of experiential education. By combining the Ministry required curriculum with more "real-world" experiences, Blyth Academy students will gain an unparalleled understanding of the subjects learnt.
Blyth Academy’s goal is for students to continue in their studies as prepared young adults. With the Foundations Program, students will experience an innovative approach to learning that will assist them in finding success in their later years.

Blyth International Summers – Midsummer Update from Sam Blyth
Dear Parents,
On Saturday, our last July international program returns home and I thought it would be useful and interesting to review what has happened. It has been a very good start to the summer with about 900 students and 140 teachers and staff taking part -- another 160 will go on our August programs, most of whom leave this weekend.
Academically, we have had our best results ever, both in terms of grades and completion rate. It looks like 100% of the students will gain a credit which is great tribute to the teaching staff and tutors. Even those students who I sent home this year have continued in their courses with our teachers. Only one student voluntarily withdrew from their program which is a record for us and speaks to the empathy and care provided on site by our staff.
Our programs have visited 26 countries and, not surprisingly, some have provided challenges. We worked our way around general strikes and demonstrations in Athens, happily arranged lodging 10 km away from the bomb sites in central Mumbai and missed the first tropical storm of the year in the Mexican Caribbean. Severe winter storms in southern New Zealand cut one day out of some of the group's finale in Fiji, but when it snows in a ski resort there are lots of benefits.
Against this, there are many, many stories of personal success for our students. I visited more than 600 of them in early July and they spoke of their love for the program, howgreat their teachers were and that, for most, it was the best summer of their lives.
I am including in this letter a link to an article from today's New York Times which I thought you would find interesting reading. What you have given your son/daughter is a great gift and this article shows that the academic benefits are enduring.
With best wishes,
Sam Blyth

January 31, 2011 - Queen’s signs agreement with Blyth to offer courses internationally
Kingston, ON – Queen’s University will offer a range of undergraduate courses in locations around the world during spring and summer terms beginning in 2012 under a new agreement with Blyth Educational Travel.
“The Queen’s-Blyth International Studies Program broadens the scope of the university’s international offerings, which already include the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) and numerous exchange opportunities,” says John Dixon, Vice-Provost (International). “This program will enhance the university’s international profile and expand enrollment through off-campus delivery of courses.”
Queen’s University will administer all academic aspects of the program. Blyth Educational Travel, which has been offering high-quality academic programs internationally for over 30 years, will be responsible for all logistical matters including travel, accommodations and field-trip arrangements.
"We are delighted to work with Queen's University in providing these innovative, experiential, accredited university programs starting in the spring of 2012. They will be a natural complement to our international high school courses, which have provided Canadians and Americans access to accredited programs in over 30 countries for the past 34 years," said Sam Blyth, Managing Director, Blyth Educational Travel.
The three-year agreement will initially see Queen’s courses offered in international venues beginning in spring 2012. Although exact locations have still to be finalized, it is expected that three will be in Europe – most likely France, Spain and Italy – while the others will likely be in Australia and Costa Rica.
“The ability to take intensive four-week Queen’s courses in Paris or Rome, Sydney or Barcelona constitutes an exciting new international opportunity for students in a rapidly shrinking global environment, and is a logical extension of Queen’s overseas offerings at the BISC since 1994,” says Patrick O’Neill, Associate Dean (International) in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
Five courses will be offered at each venue during the spring (mid-May to mid-June) and summer (mid-June to mid-July) terms. Each three-unit course (0.5) will be four weeks in duration and will include a rich field-study component developed according to the venue and course, a model that has been used successfully at the BISC for several years.
The courses, intended for upper-year students, will feature small class sizes of between 10 and 25 participants, and will be open to students from across Canada and the United States. As in the case of the BISC, Queen’s will hire instructors for the international courses through an open application process.

Thirteen students have just returned from what they described variously as an “awesome”, “life changing” experience in the remote Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. As they travelled across the country they attended festivals, were welcomed into local homes and hiked and explored the world’s best preserved ecosystem.
On their final day they climbed to the “Tigers Nest” a monastery high above the Paro Valley. En route they were joined by HRH, Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, who addressed the group as one former Canadian school student to another.

BLYTH ACADEMY IS FIRST IN THE WORLD TO ANNOUNCE THE SUPPLY OF SONY READERS IN PLACE OF PRINTED TEXTBOOKS
Blyth Academy, Sony Canada and Pearson Canada make digital textbooks a reality
TORONTO – November 17, 2009 – Embracing the benefits of electronic reading, students at Blyth Academy are today beginning the transition from using traditional printed textbooks to digital textbooks read on the Sony® Reader Digital Book. Blyth Academy is the first high school in the world to announce that each student will be supplied with an e-Reader in place of printed textbooks.
From history class to political science, each student will have access to all of his or her course content using leading edge digital technology from Sony and publishers like Pearson Canada. The students will use Sony Readers that are pre-loaded with course textbooks, outlines, assignments, reference materials, background reading and personal timetables.
“My Sony Reader helps me get organized,” said Michael Tyrrell, student at Blyth Academy. “I have all my textbooks and class material on it - it’s really cool. I feel like somebody just personalised school to fit me.”
Blyth Academy selected the Sony Reader Touch™ Edition because it’s easy to use with intuitive touch screen navigation, and its open format provides students with access to content from numerous sources.
“We’re excited about how the Sony Reader can enhance a student’s learning experience,” says Tim Algate, Reader Product Manager with Sony Canada. “We’ll be listening to these students, using their feedback to evolve our Reader offering for education.”
The school has compiled a library of digital content from textbook publishers like Pearson and other class material and literature in digital format. Blyth will give students access to digital assets for university admission, offering everything they need to chose and apply to any university.
“The digital content we’ve acquired, coupled with the students’ Sony Readers, will dramatically improve student access to textbooks, collateral material, literature and reading in general,” said Sam Blyth, Chair, Blyth Academy. “Our student survey shows that they are twice as likely to read a book available in an e-book format as in hard copy form.”
Helping lead the way in delivering digital content for education are publishers like Pearson Canada.
“Pearson Canada is taking students beyond the four corners of the printed textbook,” said Anne-Marie Scullion, Vice President of Marketing Field Services, Pearson Canada. “Our focus is on developing flexible and adaptive content to engage students in a 21st century learning environment.”
Students will also have access to more than half a million free e-books from Google through the Sony eBook store at www.ebookstore.sony.com, as well as the e-books offered by the Toronto Public Library.
